## Mathematics, basic syllabus (MAB)

Sequence of completion:

It is recommended that courses be completed in the numerical order. Specialisation courses are taken after the compulsory ones so that the last course is MAB9, which prepares students for the matriculation exam.

COMPULSORY COURSES

MAB1 Expressions and equations

The core contents of the course are: linear dependence and proportionality between quantities, converting word problems into equations and solving them as well as interpreting and assessing solutions. Quadratic polynomial functions and solving quadratic equations. Evaluated with a number grade.

MAB2 Geometry

The core contents of the course include the following: similarity of figures; right-angled triangle trigonometry; Pythagoras' theorem; determining areas and volumes of figures and bodies; use of geometrical methods in the co-ordinate system. Evaluated with a number grade.

MAB3 Mathematical models I

The course places emphasis on the following: applying linear and exponential models; using exponential equations using logarithms; solving power equations. Evaluated with a number grade.

MAB4 Mathematical analysis

The objectives of the course are for students to learn to examine the rate of change of a function using graphical and numerical methods and to determine the maximum and minimum of polynomial functions in connection with applications. The core contents of the course are: derivatives of polynomial functions, examining the sign and behaviour of polynomial functions and determining the extreme values. Evaluated with a number grade.

MAB5 Statistics and probability

The core contents of the course are: determining the parameters of continuous and discrete statistical distributions; normal distribution and standardisation of distributions; combinatorics; the concept of probability and the use of rules for calculating probabilities and of the models illustrating these. Evaluated with a number grade.

MAB6 Mathematical models II

The core contents are: linear equations with two variables; solving pairs of linear equations; linear programming; geometric and arithmetic progressions and sums. Evaluated with a number grade.

NATIONWIDE SPECIALISATION COURSES

MAB7 Commercial mathematics

Topics include: index numbers, cost, money transactions, loan and tax calculations. Number sequences, series and mathematical models based on these. Cost effectiveness and linear optimazation. Evaluated with a number grade.

MAB8 Mathematical models III

Trigonometry; the concept of vectors and the principles of basic vector operations. Evaluated with a number grade.

SCHOOL-BASED SPECIALISATION COURSES

MAB9 Course preparing for the matriculation exam

The syllabus of basic mathematics is revised and complemented. Students are prepared for taking the matriculation exam. Evaluated with a number grade. A 4 will not count towards the 75 courses.

MAB10 Math Preparation Course

This course is offered to students in order to prepare them for studying short course mathematics. It will review the following lower secondary topics: exponents, polynomials, equations, inequalities and paired equations. Evaluated with a number grade. A 4 will not count towards the 75 courses.
