Health education (TE)

General guidelines and sequence of completion:
The courses must be completed in the numerical order. Possible independent course completion or any changes and accreditation of courses must be discussed with the teacher before the commencement of the course. Courses TE1 and TE2 are taught partly in English; this also applies to the material used on the course. Finnish speakers are also requested to buy the Finnish textbook. Finnish is the main language of instruction on course TE3.

About 80% of the TE1-course is in English (unless the group consists completely of Finnish curriculum students) and about 50% of the TE2-course is in English (unless the group consists completely of Finnish curriculum students (Note that if you wish to study the course completely in English, you must discuss it with the teacher beforehand, and get their approval).

The book used on the TE1-course is in finnish, but the, as are most of the course handouts. The TE3-course is in finnish (If you wish to study the course completely in English, you must discuss it with the teacher beforehand, and get their approval).

COMPULSORY COURSE

TE1 Foundations of health
The objective of the course is to familiarise students with the factors influencing a person's physical, mental and social health and functional abilities. Further objectives include supporting choices that promote health and making students aware of the ways to acquire, use and assess information about health and diseases. The contents include: global health issues; the most common national diseases and the prevention of such diseases; health-related exercise; healthy nutrition; sexual health; mental health and substances. Evaluated with a number grade.

NATIONWIDE SPECIALISATION COURSES

TE2 Young people, health and everyday life
The objective of the course is to make students reflect on values related to health and illness, as well as to provide them with capabilities to justify their own choices from the perspective of well-being and health. The course work may include a portfolio project on the student's own life and health, dealing with issues like self-knowledge, mental and physical resources, health-related habits and possible health risks. Evaluated with a number grade.

TE3 Health and research
The course aims at providing the basic knowledge of the methods used in research into health and at providing skills to acquire and use this research information, as well as promoting critical literacy in relation to research information communicated by the media. Students carry out a small-scale health survey and get familiar with the developments in medicine, national health and health services. Evaluated with a number grade.

SCHOOL-BASED SPECIALISATION COURSE

TE4 Health Education senior year course

The aim of the health education senior year course is to further specify students' level of knowledge and skills in order to create a personal study plan, to summarise the core contents of health education, to strengthen important concepts and to practise the techniques of answering matriculation examination questions. The course is held in Finnish. Grading: Completed.
