I'm glad to be one of those who got in to KSYK, it was the best thing in my life. Alli

Chemistry (KE)

Sequence of completion:
The courses are completed in the numerical order. Possible independent course completion must be discussed with the teacher. It is recommendable to complete KE6 just before the matriculation exam.

KE1 The chemistry of man and of the living environment
Students examine the structures of organic compounds and their properties and reactions as well as their significance to people and living environments. The contents also include: chemical bonds and the polarity of organic compounds; different types of mixture; amounts of substances; proportions. Evaluated with a number grade.

KE2 The microworld of chemistry
Students learn to recognise connections between the structures and properties of substances. To clarify the properties of substances, they learn to use different types of chemical models, tables and systems, for example, the periodic system and the atomic structure (electronic structure and atomic orbitals). The concepts of isomerism and chemical bonds are consolidated. Evaluated with a number grade.

KE3 Reactions and energy
Students examine chemical reactions, i.e. factors influencing the process of chemical reactions and reaction rates as well as energy changes in chemical reactions and their significance to living environments (industry, e.g.). Furthermore, students are familiarised with chemical equations, stoichiometric calculations and the Ideal Gas Law. Evaluated with a number grade.

KE4 Metals and materials
The course familiarises students with the principles of electrochemical phenomena and relevant quantitative applications as well as the properties and manufacturing methods of different materials. Electrochemical series, standard electrode potentials, chemical cells and electrolysis are examined by means of oxidising and reducing reactions. Evaluated with a number grade.

KE5 Reactions and equilibrium
Students examine reaction equilibria, acid-based equilibrium, strong and weak acids and bases as well as solubility and solubility equilibrium. The KE5 course is studied in Finnish. Evaluated with a number grade.

KE6 Preparing for the matriculation exam
Students revise the core contents of the upper secondary chemistry syllabus and are prepared for the matriculation exam. The KE6 course is studied in Finnish. Evaluated with a number grade. A 4 will not count towards the 75 courses.

KE8 Chemistry phenomena online

The course is organised entirely online. We explore our everyday life from the aspect of chemistry. Can we reduce the chemical burden towards ourselves and nature by our own actions? The course can be completed after the compulsory chemistry courses. The course is taught in Finnish. Grading: Completed.

KE10 Biochemistry

The course combines chemistry and biology. Students get to focus on the chemical structure and biological functions of essential biomolecules through laboratory work and theory. This course can be completed after the compulsory chemistry and biology courses. The course is taught in Finnish. Numerical grading. Grade 4 does not add to the total number of courses.
