Biology (BI)

Sequence of completion
It is recommended to complete the compulsory courses in numerical order and take the advanced courses only after completing the compulsory ones. First grade students may take course BI13 whereas courses BI4 and BI5 are recommended to second graders. Course Bi9 is a preparation course for matriculation examinations and it is recommended to be completed in third grade before the matriculation examination in biology.


BI1 Organic world
Students are made familiar with characteristics and fundamental conditions of life as well as diversity, classification and development of ecosystems and species. Furthermore, students are familiarised with the basics of ecology at the level of populations, communities and ecosystems. Independent course completion is only allowed in exceptional cases. Evaluated with a number grade.

BI2 Cells and heredity
The course familiarises students with cell structures; cell metabolism and reproduction; the structure and functions of DNA; basics of inheritance. Independent course completion is only allowed in exceptional cases. Evaluated with a number grade.


BI3 Environmental ecology
The course places emphasis on the basics of ecology and makes students familiar with environmental problems and their potential solutions. Each student plans and implements a small-scale research project on the state of the environment. Furthermore, the course aims at developing students' environmental literacy and helping them to understand the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development. Evaluated with a number grade.

BI4 Human biology
The emphasis is placed on structures and functions as well as regulation of vital functions. Further areas to be dealt with are: human reproduction; significance of heredity and health; defence mechanisms of organ systems. Evaluated with a number grade.

BI5 Biotechnology
The course makes students familiar with functions of genes and their regulation as well as the ways in which humans have been able to make use of the application opportunities provided by biotechnology. Students also learn about techniques of genetic engineering and their applications in medicine, plant and animal breeding, cure of genetic diseases and in industry. Evaluated with a number grade.


BI7 Practical course 2
The course is based on the A level curriculum. The aim is to further the students practical skills, especially their ability to plan their own research and to analyse their obtained results. Practical work includes cell respiration, photosynthesis, anatomy and gene technology. A prerequisite for attendance is course 5 and 6. Evaluated with a number grade. A 4 will not count towards the 75 courses.

BI9 Revision course
The course is aimed at those students who are writing their matriculation exam in biology. During the course the central aspects of biology will be covered. Evaluated with a number grade. A 4 will not count towards the 75 courses.

BI10 Laboratory course

In this course students learn contents of compulsory biology courses (BI1 and BI2) by doing laboratory work and getting familiarised with other research methods. The aim is to develop students' experimental skills. This course is also an introduction to topics of optional courses (BI3 -BI5). Completing this course does not require completion of previous courses LB12-LB15. Numerical grading. Grade 4 does not add to the total number of courses.
